Hands up who has never had Panna Cotta! I have been living in the UK for quite a few years now and this is one of the most popular desserts you often find in restaurant menus.
"Panna cotta" literally means cooked cream. It is basically made all with cream which you can then flavour according to taste. This means it is certainly not a very light dessert and you cannot have too much of it but it is fresh and delicate, just a very delicious and moreish one! I have made a strawberry compote to go with it but, of course, you can use any fruit or ingredient you like.
- Prep Time : 4 hours and 30 minutes
- Cook Time : 10 -15 minutes
Wash and slice the strawberries and cook them for 10 minutes in a saucepan with the sugar, the orange zest and half of the orange juice
Soak the gelatine in cold water for a few minutes. Heat half of the cream in a pan. Squeeze the gelatine with your hands to remove the excess water and dissolve it in the warm cream until it has melted completely
Add the remaining cream and the vanilla extract, leaving just a little to whip for the final decoration, and stir well. Put 4 tbsp of cream on each glass and then put them in the freezer for 3-4 minutes so that they will solidify
Take them out of the freezer and pour some compote on top of the cream.
Put them back in the freezer and repeat again with some more cream terminating with the compote on top. Decorate with some fresh strawberries and with some whipped cream. Put the desserts in the fridge for 4 hours before serving
PS: They will go nicely with biscuits like shortbread or any other biscuits of your choice
