Red underwear on new years eve?!

Among many Italian traditions on New Year’s eve there is, like in America, the tradition of wearing red underpants.

According to tradition they should be received as a present and they should be thrown away the day after.

This custom has now been handed down for many years and it seems that it began during the Middle Ages.

The colour red is a sigh of prosperity for the coming year.

Whereas Christmas is dictated by religion, the new coming year is all about superstition. The red colour represents the blood and the heart which indicates a person’s life and energy who basically wishes to remain alive through the new year. But it also represents your love life and your feelings. So the wish is also for good luck in your love life.

I have been wearing red knickers for many years mainly for fun rather than superstition and as I couldn’t face throwing them away the day after I have now built quite a collection in my drawers! And.. in times of recession throwing away new underwear seems eccessive!

And you, will you be wearing sexy red underpants this year?

Ha, ha, ha! I love the red underwear tradition! I mean…in America…we have New Year’s resolutions….uggg….goals!…but in Italy??? Sexy red undies! I wanted to write about this too this year, but ran out of time! Great post! And I had no idea that you are supposed to throw them away the next day! The first time I learned about this tradition I was staying with my godmother in Rome and she had all of her husband’s clothes set out on the bed for the evening….and there they were….a pair of red underwear for my 6’1 uncle. Ha, ha, ha……what a sight! Anyway…again….what a great post!
