A trip to the Italian Alps

On Sunday we went up to the Alps for a family day out. It was reaching 35C /95F and we thought it would be a good idea to get some cooler and fresher air up there. My hometown is just over an hour away from the nearest mountains.

We walked up for a couple of hours reaching a Refugio (mountain restaurant) just in time for lunch.

Refugio or mountain restaurants in the mountains

The view was fantastic! The kids had a fab time, they love running and rolling in the green grass, chasing butterflies and grasshoppers. My son seems to be obsessed with them at the moment.

They enjoyed the freedom and being in touch with nature

I had wild mushrooms with polenta. The mushrooms really tasted of the woods, so delicious.

This was followed by a soft and incredibly good cake made with lemony ricotta and blueberry. In the mountains they often have very good homemade cakes. I would like to try making this cake soon.

After lunch we rested a little and had a snooze in the grass. Then we headed back down, the children were tired after such a long walk but they enjoyed it.

There were many cyclamen flowers in the woods. These are typical of the mountains. They are beautiful and have a very strong and wonderful fragrance, just like perfume.

When we got home we stopped at the ice cream shop and bought 1 Kg of fresh artisan ice cream to take home. I had loads of it this summer, it is so incredibly addictive. I can never have enough of Italian ice cream.

    Dear Alida,
How beautiful to be among the Italian Alps..Your photos are just awesome, but you know what they say it is better if you are there in person. I can see how your children would love this outing. Being free to roam and getting back to nature is fantastic. I love the meal that you had, the wild mushrooms and the polenta looked so tasty. But we can’t forget about the cake made with lemony ricotta and blueberry. Sounds heavenly…So glad that you had a wonderful time and that you ended the day with Italian Ice Cream!! Love ice cream and on a hot day it ended rather cool! Thanks for sharing…have a fabulous day/night!
