Years ago in order to brush-up my German, I went to Austria to work as an Au-pair in the beautiful town of Graz. I only spent a couple of months there but I enjoyed my stay: beautiful old town, great walks in the mountains, friendly people and good food.
I still remember the lovely cakes on display in the windows and the weight I put on by trying every single one of them. I loved them all: from Apple Strudel, to Sachertorte, to poppy seed loafs, to the great pastries filled with fruit of the forest and the delicious berry jams. I also remember the Linzen Torte which is typical of the city of Linz, situated on the righthandside of the Danube. This is a tart made with ground nuts and berry jam but there are different varieties you can do.
You can also make biscuits which are now a staple at any bakery, the Linzen biscuits which recall the original cake. That's what I made yesterday whilst my young son was fast asleep. They don't take very long at all.
I have slightly changed the recipe and did not use the ground nuts and used honey instead of sugar and themed them for the approaching Valentine.
