Simple caprese salad – A beauty of the Italian cuisine

In its simplicity Caprese salad perfectly describes the essence of Italian cooking.

Caprese salad originates from Capri in southern Italy where tomatoes are incredibly juicy and super tasty thanks to the glorious Italian sunshine.

It is up to you how you serve this salad: if you are using cherry tomatoes you can simply mix them in a bowl with chopped mozzarella and torn basil leaves or if you have beef tomatoes you can create a small tower and serve it in single portions, this is great for dinner parties.

Simple dishes are always the best!

  • Prep Time : 5 minutes

Slice the tomatoes and sprinkle them with a little sea salt; Slice the mozzarella.

Put a tomato slice on a plate and a mozzarella slice on top. You can continue and create a small tower if you like. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and drizzle with good quality olive oil.

Serve with rustic bread or breadsticks (grissini).

This salad is a perfect example of the beauty and simplicity of Italian cuisine! I wish I could get fresh mozzarella from my market!

I get it fresh when I am in Italy and it tastes so different to the ones sold in supermarkets.

The caprese is now appearing in menus outside Italy but regrettably it is sometimes spoilt by the addition of other ingredients. In its pure state as you have demonstrated here it is simply delicious. I absolutely adore it.

You are right, outside of Italy there is a tendency of adding more ingredients to most Italian dishes. This could also be a way of disguising cheap ingredients.
